The Elephant In The Room

Elu meilleur film au Festival du Film indépendant de Londres en 2008, « The Elephant in the Room » nous propose un voyage au sein du Mouvement pour la Vérité sur le 11-Septembre.

De William Rodriguez, survivant et héros du 11-Septembre, qui fut témoin de nombreuses explosions dans la Tour Nord, à l’ex-députée verte Cynthia McKinney qui conteste le récit gouvernemental du 11-Septembre, en passant par un activiste qui s’empare des micros de supermarchés pour diffuser son message « le 11/9 était un coup monté », ce documentaire nous montre le Mouvement dans toute sa diversité. La narration objective et distanciée permet à chacun de se faire une opinion libre sur ce Mouvement.

Dans la dernière partie du film, le réalisateur Dean Puckett s’intéresse au sort épouvantable et particulièrement émouvant des secouristes du 11-Septembre. Au lendemain du 11/9, la Maison Blanche avait demandé à l’Agence de protection de l’environnement des États-Unis (EPA) de falsifier ses rapports sur la qualité de l’air afin de rouvrir la Bourse au plus vite quitte à sacrifier la santé et la vie des secouristes, pompiers, et ouvriers du bâtiment qui, mal équipés et manquant de masques, ont œuvré dans la poussière d'amiante, respirant les particules de benzène, de dioxine, de cuivre et de plomb...

L'expression « the elephant in the room » (l’éléphant dans la pièce) est une locution anglaise désignant une vérité évidente qui est ignorée ou négligée (notamment par les médias). Ce qui est sans aucun doute le cas du Mouvement pour la Vérité sur le 11/9.

In retrospect of course, looking back, you think about everything that went on. The fact that the power down in itself was unusual, the fact that there were visitors to the tower, many in overalls, like engineers of some kind wandering around the floors carrying tool boxes and cables and so on. At the time, wasn’t suspicious of it, didn’t think anything of it.

The Elephant in the Room is a documentary following British filmmaker Dean Puckett through his journey into the 9/11 Truth Movement: a global movement of ‘conspiracy theorists’ who believe that the official explanation about what happened on 9/11 is totally or partially inaccurate.

The filmmakers travel from middle England, across Europe and to New York for the six year anniversary of the attacks, where the film takes one final twist as we are introduced to the 9/11 first responders who are suffering from various grave health difficulties due to the toxic dust that they breathed in trying to help their country during the weeks after this tragic event. Told with a personal hands on approach that avoids advancing any one position, the film asks the question: are these crazy conspiracy theorists? Or is 9/11 Truth a credible political movement?

Even government officials with experience since 9/11 are nagged by anxiety about the jeopardy that a war without end against unseen terrorists poses to our way of life, our personal freedoms. “I always said, when I was in my position running counterterrorism operations for the FBI, ‘How much security do you want, and how many rights do you want to give up?’” Larry Mefford, former assistant FBI director, tells Smith. “I can give you more security, but I’ve got to take away some rights.

Personally, I want to live in a country where you have a common-sense, fair balance, because I’m worried about people that are untrained, unsupervised, doing things with good intentions but, at the end of the day, harm our liberties.
