The Phenomenon of Man (Le Phénomène Humain, 1955) is a non-fiction book written by French philosopher, paleontologist and Jesuit priest Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. In this work, Teilhard describes evolution as a process that leads to increasing complexity, culminating in the unification of consciousness.

The book was finished in the 1930s, but was published posthumously in 1955. The Roman Catholic Church considered that Teilhard?s writings contradicted orthodoxy and prohibited their publication.

With the development of a complex Internet-based global society, some have argued that The Phenomenon of Man contains many insights that have proven prescient.

[large]THE FUTURE OF MAN[/large]

This book contains 22 essays by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin; scientist/philosopher. Regarding the future of the human race, he deals with topics such as globalization, the nuclear bomb, democracy, the likelihood of life on other planets, and whether peace on earth is scientifically viable.

The Future of Man is a magnificent introduction to the thoughts and writings of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, one of the few figures in the history of the Catholic Church to achieve renown as both a scientist and a theologian. Trained as a paleontologist and ordained as a Jesuit priest, Teilhard de Chardin devoted himself to establishing the intimate, interdependent connection between science?particularly the theory of evolution?and the basic tenets of the Christian faith. At the center of his philosophy was the belief that the human species is evolving spiritually, progressing from a simple faith to higher and higher forms of consciousness, including a consciousness of God, and culminating in the ultimate understanding of humankind's place and purpose in the universe. The Church, which would not condone his philosophical writings, refused to allow their publication during his lifetime. Written over a period of thirty years and presented here in chronological order, the essays cover the wide-ranging interests and inquiries that engaged Teilhard de Chardin throughout his life: intellectual and social evolution, the coming of ultra-humanity, the integral place of faith in God in the advancement of science, and the impact of scientific discoveries on traditional religious dogma. Less formal than The Phenomenon of Man and The Divine Milieu, Teilhard de Chardin's most renowned works, The Future of Man offers a complete, fully accessible look at the genesis of ideas that continue to reverberate in both the scientific and the religious communities.

The essential companion to Pierre Teilhard de Chardin's The Phenomenom of Man, The Divine Milieu expands on the spiritual message so basic to his thought. He shows how man's spiritual life can become a participation in the destiny of the universe.

Teilhard de Chardin -- geologist, priest, and major voice in twentieth-century Christianity -- probes the ultimate meaning of all physical exploration and the fruit of his own inner life. The Divine Milieu is a spiritual treasure for every religion bookshelf.

A spiritual treasure for every religion bookshelf. De Chardin, geologist and priest, probes the ultimate meaning of all physical exploration and the fruit of his own inner life. "Extraordinary."--Karl Stern --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

[large]The Heart of Matter[/large]

ImageThe Heart of Matter

This last volume in Pere Teilhard's collected works contains two previously unavailable essays of key importance: "The Heart of Matter," a spiritual autobiography written in 1950, toward the end of his life, and "The Christic," written a month before he died, a profession of faith that develops further the views set forth in The Divine Milieu. Together they sum up his unique vision, at which he arrived by the separate yet converging roads of science and religion. These two essays, composing over a third of the book, are followed by nineteen shorter pieces.

Teilhard's towering conception of man's ascension toward unity with Christ continues to influence and illuminate contemporary theological thought. This volume confirms his stature as one of the most fascinating spiritual figures of our century.

"Highly recommended as an essential tool Jar understanding Teilhard's thought, especially in its last stage."
Library Journal

"Teilhard's writing should be particularly appealing to today's reader because it is marred neither by devotional excesses nor by pietistic narcissism ... Like other great visional) poets- Blake, Hopkins, Yeats-Teilhard engages the reader both intellectually and sensually ... [These essays] are within the ken ofj most lay readers and should prove both engrossing and inspirational. "

Image"Like other great visionary poets?Blake, Hopkins, Yeats?Teilhard engages the reader both intellectually and sensually."

The Washington Post Book World

In Toward the Future, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin returns to the question of what it means to be human and Christian in the modern age. Dealing specifically with what he believes is an "outmoded" concept of a Christ leading lost souls back to a rigidly straight path, he considers the various spiritual roads mapped by teachers of other faiths, especially in the Far East. And Teilhard, expounding on one of his most popular themes, continues to explore the nature of spiritual energy which, he maintains, will lead mankind toward an even greater intensity of collective consciousness.

"He could write with equal insight on the spiritual implications of the atomic age, the biological basis of the democratic spirit, the nature of Christian education."

These articles form the early part of Teilhard's career: written during his action in the first World War. These essays show his early thought before it would be more clearly expounded later on. In conjunction with his later writings, they present a good look at the development of Teilhard's thought. There is, however, in here a masterpiece entitled "The Eternal Feminine" which inspired Henri de Lubac to write a book by the same name.

In this book, Teilhard treats the subject of "Human Energy" which can also be called "Conscious Evolution."

Evolution's self recognition in humanity has tremendous consequences for both the individualized person and the collective multiple. Teilhard treats the multi-faceted aspects of the personality in evolutionary development.

He also treats again, in much richer vein, the rise of spirit (conscious energy)throughout evolutionary history and the moral conclusions to be drawn from it.

In this book Teilhard expounds the evolutionary history of the earth, the arrival of the human species, and it's destiny in the far future. He identifies certain threads of recurrence in evolution's past, and using these laws of recurrence he projects the most probable future destiny of the earth. His ingenious conclusion is that evolution is in fact involuting on itself, meaning that the future (like the past) is one of convergence and synthesis, destined for eventually single unity in what he calls the Omega Point. He has been identified as the inspiration of Transformism.

This book is perhaps the work of Pierre Teilhard's that stands alone in that it contains almost no scientific treatises. It is mainly a poetic/spiritual testament to the world of spirit in matter. It envisions Christ as the heart of the universe, in the heart of matter.

THE MAKING OF A MIND

Letters from a Soldier-Priest: 1914-1919

by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

"Of the outside events in Pierre Teilhard's life the war was probably the most decisive of all It had a profound effect on his whole being/' says Marguerite Teillard-Chambon, the recipient of these letters, in her introduction to the book.

At the outbreak of World War I Teilhard de Chardin, already an ordained priest, joined the French army. Throughout the four and a half years he spent as a stretcher-bearer in the front lines, he corresponded regularly with his cousin Marguerite. Since childhood they had been very close, and intellectually and spiritually had much in common. These letters reveal the development of Teilhard's ideas and personality, as well as his reactions to the war.

The danger and hardship that Teilhard shared with his Regiment of Zouaves and Moroccan Tirailleurs brought an intensity and awareness that he found immensely stimulating. His courage under fire and his devotion to the men under his care won for him the Croix de Guerre, the Medaille Militaire, the Legion d'Honneur, and three mentions in dispatches. The citation for the Legion d'Honneur describes Teilhard as "an outstanding stretcher-bearer who, during four years of active service, was in every battle and engagement the regiment took part in, applying to remain in the ranks in order that he might be with the men whose dangers and hardships he constantly shared.?

Part of THE MAKING OF A MIND is Teilhard's spiritual counsel to Marguerite. Another part describes his own development and the emergence of his great vision of the human situation. Finally, there is an extraordinarily detailed account of his day-to-day experiences at the front?his "baptism into reality."

"There is no better work of Teilhard's?and hence no better work all round ? for entering that rich and complex experience that was the starting point of all his subsequent endeavor. And this is of capital importance for understanding what the man is about."

http://www.histoireebook.com/index.php? ... ene-humain[/large]

[large]THE APPEARANCE OF MAN[/large]

by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

[large]Pierre Teilhard de Chardin - The Appearance of Man.pdf (7.19 MB)
http://www.balderexlibris.com/index.php?post/2012/03/04/Teilhard-de-Chardin-Pierre-The-Appearance-of-Man[/large]

A major Teilhard de Chardin work on the nature and spiritual significance of man's evolution

The unique vision of Teilhard's earlier books is enriched and enlarged in this work, which complements and confirms THE PHENOMENON OF MAN.
Here is a collection of reports and essays on the origin of man, considering the problem as it presents itself in the light of recent paleontological discoveries including those in which Teilhard himself participated. The writings are grouped in logical sequence, making for easy reading of the subject as a whole.

THE APPEARANCE OF MAN is broadly divided into five sections:
* the state of the problem at the turn of the century
* the paleontological discoveries
* the question of the "missing link"
* the phenomenon of "imbrication"
* the peculiarities of the human species

THE APPEARANCE OF MAN focuses on recent human fossils discovered in China, North America, and South Africa. It gives a meticulous, detached account, with many diagrams, of scientific discoveries and their implications. The last essay on the subject of The Singularities of the Human Species is of special significance. Teilhard wrote it after reading the much discussed little book by the well-known agnostic biologist, Jean Rostand, What I Believe.

Teilhard writes: "Since Galileo (as Freud remarked ), in the eyes of science, man has continually lost, one after another, the privileges that had previously made him consider himself unique in the world. Astronomically... biologically ... psychologically ... Now paradoxically, this same man is in the process of re-emerging from his return to the crucible, more than ever at the head of nature; since by his very melting back into the general current of convergent cosmogenesis, he is acquiring in our eyes the possibility and power of forming in the heart of space and time, a single point of universalization for the very stuff of the world."

THE AUTHOR

Leontine Zanta was a brilliant, delightful, and famous Parisian. The first Frenchwoman to become a doctor of philosophy, she was the center of a lively group of writers and thinkers, and a teacher and lecturer of international renown. She was also a friend of Pierre Teilhard, and throughout their correspondence each encouraged, sustained, and tested out the thought of the other.

Teilhard's letters, almost all written from China, disclose a profound mutual respect and shed new light on his spiritual crisis with the Jesuits. His disagreement with his superiors, the intensity of his suffering, and the gradual working through to a deeper vision?all are exposed here in a highly personal and interesting account.

Mlle. Zanta kept Teilhard in touch with the intellectual and spiritual world of Paris. To her he could open his heart and his mind, sharing the development of his thought during his most fruitful years, describing his daily life, sure of finding sympathy and understanding on the deepest level. With wisdom and delicacy he gives his friend spiritual direction, revealing in the process the richness of his own inner life.

"In these letters Teilhard expresses himself freely : he was writing in confidence; there is an uncomplicated spontaneity, immense honesty."

? Les Etudes

"They give a clear impression of the man, his vision and his mission."

? Times (London) Literary Supplement

Introductory essays by Henri de Lubac and by Robert Garric.

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin is world-famous as a philosopher, scientist, and prophet.

ImageLETTERS TO TWO FRIENDS,
by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, constitutes a seminal volume in THE PERSPECTIVES IN HUMANISM SERIES. These letters, written by Father Teil-hard to American friends, describe the author's daily life and the development of his thought. In this way a kind of "journal" has been created- a journal extending from 1926 to 1952, throughout almost all of Father Teilhard's life as a scientist and as a priest. The letters come from Peking, Paris, and Rome. They mark Father Teilhard's periodic exile and yet permit us to follow the story of his inner life almost month by month. The spontaneity of his tone and the depth and quality of his feelings and thoughts make these letters a unique document. The first letters date from 1926, when Father Teilhard left his professorship at the Catholic Institute in Paris to lead the life of an explorer in the Far East. This period was one of the most difficult of his life. "I would prefer Tientsin to the Catholic Institute," he wrote to a friend when he embarked for China in 1923. But his second departure in 1926 had something of the aspect of a disgrace. He had been removed from Paris by his superiors, to whom he had been denounced for propagating dubious ideas and who feared a censure that would be prejudicial both to the career of the young paleontologist and to the good name of the Order. Father Teilhard obeyed in a spirit of faith, but without compromising his principles. A profound change subsequently took place in his scientific vision of the world. Until then passionately interested in the study of prehistory, he now lost his taste for the past. He doubted both his religious vocation and his scientific calling.
Yet Father Teilhard always held that "everything that happens is worthy of adoration."
"Truly" he wrote, "there is a Christian note which makes the whole World vibrate like an immense gong, in the divine Christ." One of the arresting elements of this collection is its juxtaposition of the social upheavals of our epoch with the story of a man's steady spiritual growth. Father Teilhard gives a sharply focused picture of the world in which he lives, whether it be China in the midst of civil war or the France of the 30's under the threat of approaching war, and at the same time portrays the evolution of his inner world, which found final expression in The Phenomenon of Man and The Divine Milieu.
Although his struggle to persuade the Church to grant him publication of his major works was doomed to failure in his lifetime, Father Teilhard's allegiance to his Church and to his Order are reflected in these letters. Here we encounter an intellect attempting to reconcile science and religion, evolution and Christianity -a vision that united spirit and matter in a universal process of being and becoming. This volume includes a striking profile of Father Teilhard by his friend and religious superior, the Reverend Rene d'Ouince, S.J., and an assessment of Teilhard as a scientist by the eminent geneticist, Theodosius Dobzhansky.
